U.S. Bicycle Route 1

U.S. Bicycle Route 1 follows NH Route 1A and 1B 22 miles from Seabrook to Portsmouth. The route is also designated as a State Bicycle Route, the NH Coastal Scenic Byway, and the on-road route for the East Coast Greenway through New Hampshire. Data from Strava show sections to be the most heavily traveled bicycle route in the state, serving as a local connection but also an interstate connection to Maine and Massachusetts. RPC recently finished a Corridor Management Plan for the NH Coastal Byway which found high usage of the corridor and also strong public support for further improvements including shoulder widening and steps to minimize conflicts with on-street parking.

Great Bay Bicycle Loop

The Great Bay Bicycle Loop is envisioned to connect the communities of Portsmouth, Greenland, Stratham, Newfields, Newmarket, Durham, Madbury, Dover and Newington with a safe on-road route for bicycle commuting or recreational riding. RPC has worked on this initiative since the mid-1990s and the development of the Pease-Portsmouth Bicycle Bridge over the Spaulding Turnpike. Other segments include shoulder work on NH108 in Durham, Newmarket and Newfields; completion of the Pease Multi-Use Path, and maintaining and improving the bicycle connection across Little Bay as part of the Newington-Dover project.
